Full means there is no more room, and empty means there is nothing inside. Children use both words every day, a full glass of milk, an empty bowl, a basket full of apples, and a page of pictures helps them say which is which. Each box on this page shows two pictures, such as a full jar and an empty one, and the child circles the full one or the empty one.
Say the words out loud as you point, and then try it with real things at home: fill a cup and pour it out, fill a basket with toys and tip them out. Children enjoy pouring and filling, so a bath or a sink of water is a very good place to practice. Talk about what is in each picture and how you can tell.
