Heavy and light are about how hard something pulls on your hands, and a child learns them by lifting real things: a stone, a feather, a full bag, an empty one. Each box on this page shows two different pictures, such as an elephant and a mouse or a rock and a feather, and the child circles the heavier one or the lighter one. Say the words out loud as you point, and then try it with real things at home: a book and a sheet of paper, a full cup and an empty one.
Children often think bigger always means heavier, so look for a big, light thing too, like a balloon, and a small, heavy thing, like a stone. A kitchen scale makes the idea visible: the heavy side goes down.

The box shows a rock and a feather. The page says to circle the heavier one. A rock is hard to lift and a feather floats, so circle the rock.
