Long and short tell how far something stretches from one end to the other. A pencil, a carrot and a ribbon can all be long or short, and a child learns the words by laying two of the same thing side by side. Each box on this page shows two pictures of one thing drawn at different lengths, and the child circles the longer one or the shorter one.
The pictures are the same kind, so length is the only thing that changes. Practice with real things at home: a long crayon and a short crayon, a long sock and a short sock, a long line of blocks and a short one. Children often say big when they mean long, and that is a good moment to say: this one stretches farther, so it is longer.
Head Start ELOF standard: P-MATH 8, K.MD.A.2
Two pencils lie side by side, one stretching farther than the other. The page says to circle the longer one, so circle the pencil that stretches farther.
