Grade 1 Reading Worksheet

Circle the word for the picture.

Matching a printed word to a picture is how first graders check that they are really reading and not guessing. On this grade 1 worksheet each box shows a big picture, and your child reads three words and circles the one that names it. The other two words are real words that look almost the same, such as cat, cot and cut, so a child who looks only at the first letter will get them wrong.
Support sheets use three-letter words and later sheets add words such as duck, frog and kite. Ask your child to sound out each word, not just the first letter, and say what the other words would be a picture of.
Common Core standard: L.1.4
The picture is a cat. The words are cot, cat and cut. Sound out each one: only cat names the picture.
Choosing a word because it starts like the picture and not reading the rest of it.
Say the picture's name, then sound out each word, all the way to the end.
