Word parts can give first graders a powerful clue to meaning. The workbook introduces prefixes such as un- and re- and suffixes such as -ful and -less near the end of the year, after children have enough base-word knowledge to reason from the parts. This worksheet asks children to connect a word part to its meaning, choose the word that fits a sentence, and explain how the part changes the base word. Support pages use very transparent examples like redo and unhappy. Standard and challenge pages include careful contrasts such as helpful and helpless. Children may read the whole word as a memorized sight word and miss the meaningful part. Ask them to cover the prefix or suffix, read the base, then uncover the part and ask what changed.
