About this worksheet

Characters in a story have feelings, and the story often does not tell us the feeling in so many words. Instead the reader works it out from what happens. When a puppy is a birthday gift, the character feels happy. When a balloon floats away, the character feels sad. When a loud crash comes from a dark hallway, the character feels scared. Noticing feelings helps a second grader understand why characters act the way they do, and it helps them understand their own feelings too.

This worksheet gives eight short events, and the child circles the feeling that fits each one: happy, sad, angry, scared, proud or surprised. Ask your child to say how they would feel in the same situation, and then to say whether the character might feel the same or different.

What your child will learn

  • Name feelings such as happy, sad, angry, scared, proud and surprised
  • Tell how a character feels from what happens
  • Link feelings to events in a story
