About this worksheet

Most stories are built around a problem and its solution. A problem is something that goes wrong or that a character wants to fix, such as a kite stuck in a tree. The characters usually try something first, and it does not always work. Then they find a solution, which is what finally fixes the problem. Seeing this pattern helps a second grader understand why a story has the events it does and what the ending means.

This worksheet prints a short story and asks five questions: who is in the story, where it happens, what the problem is, what the character tried first and how the problem was solved. Each question has three choices. Ask your child to say the story in one sentence: the problem was ... and it was solved when ...

What your child will learn

  • Tell the problem and the solution of a story
  • Tell what the character tried first
  • Use the text to check each answer

Worked example

In The Stuck Kite, the problem is that the kite got stuck in a tree. Leo shook the trunk, but that did not work. The solution is that his dad used a long pole.
