About this worksheet

A prediction is a smart guess about what will happen next, and it is based on clues. Good readers make predictions all the time: when the sky is dark and thunder rumbles, they expect rain. The clues in the story and what the reader already knows about the world work together. Making predictions keeps a reader thinking and asking questions, and checking a prediction afterward shows whether the reader understood.

This worksheet gives six short situations, each with clues, and the child circles the most likely thing to happen next from three choices. One choice follows from the clues, and the other two do not. Ask your child to tell which words in the sentence were the clues, and to say how they know what will happen. A prediction can be wrong, and that is fine, as long as the clues support it.

What your child will learn

  • Use clues to predict what will happen next
  • Tell the clues from the guess
  • Check that a prediction fits the story
