About this worksheet

Some sentences tell about things that can happen in real life, and others tell about things that only happen in stories. A dog barking at the mailman is real. A dragon baking bread for a town is make-believe, because dragons are not real and animals do not bake. Telling real from make-believe helps a second grader understand what kind of book they are reading: a book about real things gives facts, and a book of make-believe tells a story that someone imagined.

It also helps the child decide when a character is doing something that could not happen. This worksheet gives ten sentences. The child reads each one and writes real or make-believe. A tip box gives the two meanings. Ask your child to tell one real thing they did today and one make-believe thing they would like to do.

What your child will learn

  • Tell what could happen from what could not
  • Use the words real and make-believe
  • Name a clue that something is make-believe

Common Core standard: RL.2.5

A cow jumps over the Moon. Cows cannot jump that high, so it is make-believe. A cat chases a mouse can happen, so it is real.
