About this worksheet

Good readers ask questions as they read, and they know where to look for the answers. Each page gives your child one short story and six questions about it, one for each of who, what, where, when, why and how, so every question wants a different kind of answer. Who asks for a person, what asks for a thing or an event, where asks for a place, when asks for a day or a time, why asks for a reason, and how asks for the way something was done or for an amount.

Your child circles the answer and can check it by finding the sentence in the story that says so. Each of the six versions uses a different story, and the support sheet shows three answer choices instead of four. Encourage your child to go back to the story and point to the sentence that holds the answer before circling it, instead of answering from memory.

What your child will learn

  • Tell what kind of answer who, what, where, when, why and how questions want
  • Find the sentence in the story that holds the answer
  • Answer a question using words from the text
  • Go back to the text instead of guessing

Common Core standard: RL.3.1
