About this worksheet
A small group of very common words appears so often that recognising them quickly makes early reading smoother. Words such as the, said, and you may not follow the sound patterns a beginning reader expects, while even regular words take too much effort if they must be decoded on every page. This worksheet asks children to notice a target word, find it among similar choices, and use it inside one short sentence. The activity is recognition rather than memorising an isolated list. Encourage your child to look across the whole word, including its first and last letters, instead of guessing from length or shape. Support items use the most frequent, shortest words and three choices. Standard and challenge levels introduce a broader bank and closer-looking distractors. If a word is missed, name it, read the tiny sentence together, and return later rather than asking for repeated copying.
