About this worksheet

There are three ways to take better care of the Earth with the things we use. To reduce is to use less in the first place, to reuse is to use something again, and to recycle is to turn an old thing into a new thing. First graders can start with simple actions: turning off a light, filling a used jar with crayons, putting a can in the right bin.

On this grade 1 worksheet each line describes one action, and your child circles recycle, reuse or reduce. Every sheet has a mix of all three. Walk around the house with your child and find one thing to reduce, one to reuse and one to recycle.

What your child will learn

  • Tell recycle, reuse and reduce apart
  • Know that reducing means using less
  • Know that reusing means using again
  • Find ways to take care of the Earth every day

NGSS standard: K-ESS3-3

Worked example

Use an empty jar to hold crayons. The jar is used again for a new job, so circle reuse.

Common mistake

Calling every action recycling, even when nothing is made into something new.

Helpful hint

Use less is reduce, use again is reuse, make into something new is recycle.
