Grade 3 Science Worksheet

Write herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore.

Animals are grouped by what they eat. An herbivore eats only plants, a carnivore eats only meat, and an omnivore eats both. On this sheet a third grader looks at a picture of an animal and writes the one word that names its diet, with no choices to pick from. Cows, rabbits and horses are the easy herbivores, lions and cats are the easy carnivores, and bears, pigs and hens are the easy omnivores.
The harder levels add animals that surprise people, such as the frog and the owl, which hunt, or the mouse and the duck, which eat both plants and animals. Knowing diets prepares a child for food chains and for reading about habitats, because who eats what decides how energy moves through an ecosystem. Ask your child to say what the animal would eat in the wild before writing.
