About this worksheet

A fossil is the print or the remains of a plant or an animal that lived a very long time ago, kept in rock. Most fossils are hard parts such as shells and bones, because soft parts rot away, and some, like footprints, are traces that show what an animal did. Scientists read fossils to learn what lived on Earth long ago and what a place was like then: a fish fossil in a desert rock shows that the land was once under water.

On this sheet a third grader looks at six fossil pictures and writes the name of each one from a clue sentence. The names are listed in the instruction, so the work is reading the clue and matching it to the picture. Ask your child what the rock was like when the animal or plant died.

What your child will learn

  • Say what a fossil is and how a fossil forms
  • Name common fossils from a picture and a clue
  • Explain what a fossil tells us about long ago

NGSS standard: 3-LS4-1

Worked example

A fish fossil is found in a dry hill. The fish needed water, so the hill was once under water.

Common mistake

Thinking a fossil is the animal itself instead of its print or hard parts in rock.

Helpful hint

Read the clue, then look for the picture of that kind of fossil.
