About this worksheet

Electricity flows through some materials and not others. A conductor lets electricity flow through it easily: metals such as copper, iron, steel and aluminum are conductors, which is why wires are made of metal. An insulator does not let electricity flow through it easily: rubber, plastic, glass, wood and cloth are insulators, which is why wires are covered in plastic and why electricians wear rubber gloves.

On this worksheet your child reads twelve sentences about everyday objects and writes conductor or insulator; the two words are in the instruction. Building Confidence uses obvious metals and plastics, On Level adds foil, a penny and cloth, and Challenge Me adds objects such as a copper pipe and a ceramic plate. Ask your child to find a conductor and an insulator at home, and never to test with an outlet.

What your child will learn

  • Say what a conductor does
  • Say what an insulator does
  • Sort everyday objects as conductors or insulators

NGSS standard: 3-PS2-3

Worked example

A copper wire is a metal, and metals let electricity flow, so it is a conductor. A rubber glove does not let electricity flow, so it is an insulator.

Common mistake

Thinking every shiny object is a conductor, or that wood and glass let electricity through.

Helpful hint

Metals are conductors. Rubber, plastic, glass, wood and cloth are insulators.
