Naming a feeling is the first step to handling it, and children learn feeling words the way they learn any other words: by seeing a face and hearing its name. Each box on this page shows three children's faces, and the child circles the one who feels happy, sad, angry, scared, tired, surprised or excited. The faces that are easy to mix up, like happy and excited or scared and worried, are never in the same box, so there is only one right answer.
Say the feeling word out loud, make the face yourself, and ask how it feels in the body: a tight tummy when we are scared, a heavy chest when we are sad. Then ask which feeling the child has right now. There are no wrong feelings; the circle is the start of a talk about them.
Head Start ELOF standard: P-SE 6, K-SEL
The page says to circle the child who looks sad. One face is smiling, one is frowning with tears and one is frowning with a hard stare. The face with sad eyes and a turned-down mouth is the sad one.
Choosing the face the child likes best. Ask how the child would feel in that face.
Look at the eyes and the mouth, then say the feeling word.
