Trace around the picture with your finger. Breathe in going up and out coming down.

Slow breathing is one of the simplest ways for a young child to calm down, and it is easier to learn with something to do. This page pairs breathing with a gentle finger trace: the child follows the outline of a big picture with one finger, breathes in while the finger goes up and breathes out while it comes down. Nothing is timed, nothing is marked and nothing needs a pencil. The finger moves at the speed of the breath, which is slower than a child usually moves, and that slowness is the point.
Sit beside the child for the first picture and breathe with her, in through the nose and out through the mouth, like blowing on soup. Use the page when a day is busy, before a nap or after a big feeling, and stop whenever she is done. Four pictures are enough; one is fine.

Put your finger at the bottom of the picture. As your finger goes up the side, breathe in through your nose. As it comes down the other side, breathe out slowly.
Rushing around the outline. Slow down until the finger and the breath move together.
Slow breath, slow finger.
