About this worksheet

First grade measurement covers three connected ideas: measuring length with repeated units, telling time on an analogue clock, and reading simple data. Measuring with unit tiles teaches that a length is a count of equal units laid end to end with no gaps, which is why children who start counting from the one mark on a ruler get an answer one too big. Telling time to the hour and half hour is mostly about learning that the short hand matters more than the long one. Reading a bar graph asks a child to connect a picture to a number and then compare two values. This worksheet rotates through all three so your child practises each without a long stretch on any one.

What your child will learn

  • Measure a length by counting equal units with no gaps
  • Tell time to the hour on an analogue clock
  • Tell time to the half hour
  • Read a value from a bar graph
  • Compare two categories on a graph

Worked example

The bar for Tuesday reaches 7 on the scale, and the bar for Wednesday reaches 3. Tuesday has 4 more, because 7 - 3 = 4.

Common mistake

Starting a measurement at the 1 mark instead of at 0, giving an answer one unit too large.

Helpful hint

For time, read the short hand first; it tells you the hour.
