About this worksheet

A summary tells the most important parts of a story in a few sentences, in the order they happened and in the reader's own words. Retelling is the first step: a child says who the story is about, what happened and how it ended, and leaves out the small details. On this worksheet your child reads one short story and fills in three spaces: who is in the story, what happened, and how it ends.

Each of the six versions has its own story, and the answer key gives a model summary. Any summary that names the characters, gives the main events in order and says how the story ends is correct. Ask your child to tell the story aloud first, in three sentences, and then write it down.
