Preschool Reading Worksheet

Circle the picture that starts with the letter A.

A has more than one sound; this page uses the short one at the start of apple, ant and alligator: the mouth opens wide for a quick aah. Every row on this page shows three pictures, and only one of them has a name that begins with A. Say the three names out loud together, slowly, and let the child decide which one starts with the short a sound. A child who picks the picture she likes best, or the one with the longest name, is not yet listening to the front of the word, so say only the first sound a few times and let her copy you.
Apple, ant, alligator, anchor, astronaut and ambulance are words most three- and four-year-olds already say. Praise the careful listening, not only the circle, and afterwards look around the house for more things that start with A.
Head Start ELOF standard: P-LIT 3, RF.K.3.A
The row shows a apple and two other pictures. Say the names slowly and stretch the front of each one. Apple starts with the short a sound of A, so circle it.
