Preschool Reading Worksheet

Circle the picture that starts with the letter B.

B is a good first letter to learn the sound of, because a child can feel it: the lips press together and a small puff of air pops out. That feeling makes the front of a word easy to notice, which is the one skill on this page. Every row shows three pictures and only one has a name that begins with B. Say the three names out loud together, slowly, and let the child choose the one that starts with the pop.
A child who picks the picture she likes best, or the one whose name is longest, is not yet listening to the front, so say only the first sound, buh, a few times and let her copy you. Ball, bear, book, bus, bell and boat are words most three- and four-year-olds already say. Praise the careful listening, not only the circle.

The row shows a sun, a boat and a cup. Say the names slowly and pop the front of each one: buh-oat starts with the pop of B, so circle the boat.
