About this worksheet
I has two sounds: the short one in igloo and the long one, the letter's name, in ice cream, ice cube and island. The page says each name slowly and the child listens for the front. Every row on this page shows three pictures, and only one of them has a name that begins with I. Say the three names out loud together, slowly, and let the child decide which one starts with the short and long i. A child who picks the picture she likes best, or the one with the longest name, is not yet listening to the front of the word, so say only the first sound a few times and let her copy you.
Igloo, ice cream, ice cube and island are words most three- and four-year-olds already say. Praise the careful listening, not only the circle, and afterwards look around the house for more things that start with I.
What your child will learn
- Say the sound the letter I makes
- Hear the short and long i at the front of a spoken word
- Pick a picture by its first sound, not by what it is
- Name everyday pictures clearly
Head Start ELOF standard: P-LIT 3, RF.K.3.A
