Preschool Reading Worksheet

Circle the picture that starts with the letter O.

O has a short sound, as in octopus and ostrich, with the mouth open round like an o and a quick ah-o. Every row on this page shows three pictures, and only one of them has a name that begins with O. Say the three names out loud together, slowly, and let the child decide which one starts with the short o sound. A child who picks the picture she likes best, or the one with the longest name, is not yet listening to the front of the word, so say only the first sound a few times and let her copy you.
Octopus, ostrich, otter and orange are words most three- and four-year-olds already say. Praise the careful listening, not only the circle, and afterwards look around the house for more things that start with O.

The row shows a octopus and two other pictures. Say the names slowly and stretch the front of each one. Octopus starts with the short o sound of O, so circle it.
