About this worksheet
E has more than one sound; this page uses the one at the start of egg and elephant, with the mouth a little open and the tongue flat, eh. Ear and earth start with E in print and are named by their first letter. Every row on this page shows three pictures, and only one of them has a name that begins with E. Say the three names out loud together, slowly, and let the child decide which one starts with the short e sound.
A child who picks the picture she likes best, or the one with the longest name, is not yet listening to the front of the word, so say only the first sound a few times and let her copy you. Egg, elephant, envelope, ear and earth are words most three- and four-year-olds already say. Praise the careful listening, not only the circle, and afterwards look around the house for more things that start with E.
