Animals are covered in different ways, and each covering helps the animal live. Fur keeps a bear warm in the cold. Feathers keep a bird warm and help it fly. Scales protect a fish and a snake and help a fish glide through the water. A shell protects a turtle, a snail or a crab from anything that wants to eat it. Scientists group animals partly by what covers them, so knowing the coverings is a first step toward knowing the animal groups.
This worksheet shows a picture of each of eight animals, and the child circles the covering that each one has: fur, feathers, scales or a shell. Ask your child to picture the animal and then to say how the covering helps it: warm, safe or able to swim and fly.
