About this worksheet

Scientists sort animals into groups by the features they share. A mammal has hair or fur, breathes air and feeds its babies milk: dogs, whales, bears and people are mammals. A bird has feathers and wings and lays eggs: owls, ducks and penguins are birds, and some birds, such as the penguin and the ostrich, cannot fly. A fish lives in water and breathes with gills, and it has fins and usually scales: a shark is a fish.

A reptile has dry, scaly skin and lays eggs on land: snakes, lizards and turtles are reptiles. An insect has six legs and three body parts: bees, ants and butterflies are insects. This worksheet shows eight animals, and the child writes the group of each one from the word box. Ask your child to say one feature that shows why an animal belongs to its group.

What your child will learn

  • Name five groups of animals
  • Tell the feature that puts an animal in its group
  • Sort animals that look very different into the same group

NGSS standard: 2-LS4-1

Worked example

A dolphin lives in the sea, but it breathes air and feeds its babies milk, so it is a mammal, not a fish.

Common mistake

Calling a whale or a dolphin a fish because it lives in the water.

Helpful hint

Think about the covering, how it breathes and how its babies are born.
