About this worksheet

A habitat is the place where a living thing finds what it needs. Plants live in many habitats, and each plant has features that suit the place where it grows. A cactus stores water and has few leaves, so it can live in a dry desert. A water lily has wide floating leaves, so it grows in a pond. A pine tree has thin needles and lives in a cold forest, while seaweed grows in the ocean.

This worksheet gives ten plants, and the child circles the habitat where each one grows best: desert, ocean, pond, forest, grassland or tundra. Ask your child to think about the plant, and ask: does it need a lot of water, a lot of sun or a cold climate? Then match it to the place that offers those things.

What your child will learn

  • Name plant habitats such as desert, ocean, pond and forest
  • Match a plant to the place where it grows
  • Explain why a plant suits its habitat

NGSS standard: 2-LS4-1
