About this worksheet

Home is a place and also a set of jobs the place does for you: it keeps the weather out, it holds a place to sleep, it is where your things stay while you are somewhere else. Preschoolers usually picture one particular shape, because a house with a triangle roof is the picture books draw, and then decide an apartment or a trailer or a grandparent's spare room is not really a home. Three questions here show homes that are none of those shapes and are still homes. Others ask what a room is for rather than what it looks like, which is the more useful idea: a room with a bed in it is for sleeping, whatever color the walls are. One group is about an address, kept deliberately general, because a child should learn their own address from a trusted adult and should never be coached to tell it to a stranger. The last group puts a home on a small picture map among other places, which is where the next worksheet picks up.

Worked example

Read aloud: this room is where somebody sleeps, so point to the thing that would be in it. The child hears sleeps and points to the bed, not to the plate. The room is named by what happens there, which is why the same question works for a house, an apartment or a tent.

Common mistake

Deciding a picture is not a home because it is the wrong shape. Ask instead whether somebody sleeps there and keeps their things there.
