About this worksheet

Small letters fill the books a child will read, yet their shapes are the harder set to hold onto. Several are the same shape facing a different way, and a preschooler who reads a picture of a cup as a cup whichever way it points has to learn that a letter does not work like that. This worksheet puts one small letter in a box and asks the child to find it again below. The easy level offers shapes that look nothing alike; the middle level offers the real look-alikes, so b sits beside d, p and q, and m sits beside n, r and h. The hardest level leaves the box empty and an adult says the letter name, so the child has to bring the shape to mind on their own. Reversals are ordinary at this age. Notice them, hold the two letters side by side, name the part that differs, and move on rather than repeating the same letter until it sours.

  • Use dots, tails and tall lines as clues
