A number line turns adding into counting on: start at the first number and hop forward once for each number you add. On this grade 1 worksheet each line shows an addition sentence and a number line with the hops already drawn, and your child counts along the line to find where the hops land and writes the sum on the line.
The number at the landing spot is hidden, so your child has to count the hops, not read the answer. Support and standard sheets use a line to 10, and challenge sheets use a line to 20. Point at the start number and count each hop out loud together.
What your child will learn
Add by counting on along a number line
Count each hop once
Find the number a set of hops lands on
Write a sum on a line
Common Core standard: 1.OA.C.5
Worked example
For 4 + 3, start at 4 and hop forward 3: 5, 6, 7. The hops land on 7, so write 7.
Common mistake
Counting the starting number as the first hop, which lands one number too early.
Helpful hint
Put your finger on the start number. Say one number for each hop.
